What Are Apple Music Song Transitions?
Apple Music offers two ways to blend songs together seamlessly: AutoMix and Crossfade. These features eliminate awkward silences between tracks by creating smooth audio transitions.
- AutoMix: Dynamically blends songs together for a continuous listening experience
- Crossfade: Fades out the current song while fading in the next one over a set time
How to Enable Song Transitions on iPhone and iPad
- Open the Settings app
- Tap Apps > Music
- Tap Song Transitions
- Turn Song Transitions on
- Choose your transition style:
- AutoMix: Seamless blending between songs (requires Apple Music subscription)
- Crossfade: Set a specific fade duration using the slider
Note: AutoMix is only available to Apple Music subscribers. If you're not subscribed, Crossfade is your only option.
How to Enable Song Transitions on Mac
- Open the Apple Music app
- From the menu bar, choose Music > Settings
- Click the Playback tab
- Select Song Transitions
- Choose AutoMix or Crossfade
How to Turn AutoMix On or Off in the Now Playing Screen
On iPhone and iPad:
- Open the Apple Music app
- Tap the MiniPlayer at the bottom of the screen
- Tap the Up Next button
- Tap the AutoMix button to toggle it on or off
On Mac:
- Open the Apple Music app
- In the playback controls, click the Up Next button
- Click the AutoMix button to toggle it
Requirement: AutoMix requires a Mac with Apple silicon. It won't appear on Intel-based Macs.
How to Turn Crossfade On or Off
On iPhone and iPad:
- Open the Apple Music app
- Tap the MiniPlayer at the bottom
- Tap Up Next
- Tap the Crossfade button to toggle
On Mac:
- Open the Apple Music app
- In playback controls, click Up Next
- Click Crossfade to toggle
Why Isn't AutoMix Working?
AutoMix might not transition between songs if:
- Your album is playing in sequential order
- The genres or tempos are incompatible
- Your content is uploaded from your music library
- Your songs are purchased from the iTunes Store
Song Transitions on Other Devices
- AutoMix is not available on: Intel-based Macs, Apple TV, Apple Watch, HomePod, Android, or Apple Music for Windows
- Crossfade works across all platforms
